Responding to the voice “I want HiVi CAST for Hi-Vision system”.
It was in the spring of 2004 when "HiVi CAST" was released as the ultimate testing disc for sound and vision for the home theatre. Know-how information for the sound and vision had been gathered since our audio-visual magazine "HiVi" was first published. This DVD product, which was compiled with our know-how, received great popularity all over Japan immediately. At that time, HiVi CAST was created using state-of-the-art technology. After that, the trend was oriented to Hi-Vision systems, and recently, we received many voices wanting a HiVi CAST HD version. However, although the atmosphere and hype for this version was high, we decided to wait considering that the high-density optical disc format had not been established. In addition, most of the general public did not possess the necessary equipment for the Hi-Vision disc reproduction. This situation changed in the beginning of 2008 with the announcement of the retreat of HD DVD from the market. It is well known that, the rapid spread of Blu-ray disc (BD) has been remarkable in recent years, with many people purchasing new Blu-ray recorders or players in 2008.
↑The sky in Cuba is deep blue in color, however the weather is unpleasantly humid and the wind from the sea is moist. This moistness interferes with the operation of the Hi-Vision VR cooled in the hotel. The location hunting was performed at the beginning of July
↑Shooting session in Hollywood: We listened to the engineer who took charge of video equipment maintenance in the production company called “Digital Jungle”. Their management was very strict, but reasonable.
New Ideas have been introduced in the Image Equalizing function.
Test signals have been greatly improved.
Super HiVi CAST (new HiVi CAST for Hi-Vision system) has been created of course based on the Blu-ray standards. Super HiVi CAST took over the four basic items from the “HiVi CAST”: Video Tune-up, Audio Tune-up, Test Signals and Demonstrations, but these contents have been all renovated. In the Video Tune-up section, the accuracy of the adjusting charts have been greatly enhanced to respond to the needs for the direct-view TV set where the device has been changed from cathode-ray tube to liquid crystal or plasma screen and, in addition, for the front projector, where the contrast has been improved significantly. In particular, using the chart for adjusting the contrast and brightness, the target can be reached with the fine tuning, aiming at the advanced display monitors where reproduction function has been greatly enhanced. The chart for the Gamma setting or sharpness adjustment we developed, is totally new type.
↑For the camera, the Sony HDW-950 (Cine Alta), fixed with the Carl Zeiss focal lens creates an appearance so high in quality that it is just like a picture. In the shooting of still photos, the depth of field was very shallow because the distance to the subject is very close.
↑In the studio shooting, the Carl Zeiss fixed focal lens was used in order to avoid the lens distortion or chromatic aberration as much as possible. We would like you to pay attention to the outline of the recorded images, where you can see that the color blur has been minimized.
For the production of Super HiVi CAST, we visited the internationally famous film town, Hollywood. The purpose was to find out the secrets through colorists and engineers who adjust the video images converted from film to Hi-Vision format as the director imagines. In addition we wanted to receive advise from them for the creation of image adjusting charts. We saw truly a divine work, which was suitable to say “Image Creation”, when they processed the images using the Barco’s digital cinema DLP projector and computer software freely in the studios of a film production company. It is not too much to say that their know-how was very much useful for the production of Super HiVi CAST. You can glimpse their work scene in the Video Tune-up section on this BD. Please watch it carefully.
↑For the shooting of female models or various material objects, large studios in Japan were used. The recording was performed checking the images using the plasma, liquid crystal screen full hi-vision type TV and D-ILA system front projector.
↑The mastering operation for 7.1ch setting was performed in the studio complying with the THX pm3 standards. Here, this studio was used for the creation of remarkable game software and film production. At the entrance to the studio a signboard was put up welcoming visitors.
The Audio Tune-up section has been designed specially for 7.1 channel HD audio setting, because there would be no change in the basic standards for 5.1 channel audio reproduction even when the Blu-ray standards are employed. For those people who want to setup the 5.1 channel speaker and adjust the channel level manually, hearing the sound with their own ears, without using the automatic sound field correction system in the AV center, we would like them to use “HiVi CAST” DVD continuously. What are the specially designed contents on this new DVD? It is the mechanism that the flow of voice signal, that is the signal route, can be identified only by hearing the voice messages on this BD. Using of the HD audio with proper procedures performed, you can enjoy its superior performance to even that of the theater. However the hurdle of adjusting the settings must be overcome for this to be materialized. Often it is the case where people buy advanced systems, but still don’t make use of all its functions. So for the Super HiVi Cast DVD, there are instructions to avoid this situation from happening and to ensure the full functionality so that the surround sounds can be maximized to its full potential, thus providing the ultimate audio and sound experience. You can identify which condition of surround sounds you hear now, by means of listening to easy understanding narration and viewing the disc navigation and simple CG on this BD. Taking example only from Dolby encoded signals, it can be identified whether if the sound currently reproduced is for Dolby digital plus 7.1ch. or Dolby digital 5.1ch., or decoded from which sound in the Dolby TrueHD 2ch. 6ch (5.1ch) or 8ch (7.1ch) setting. We believe that such function will be used by the HiVi readers to help them to avoid the confusion of complicated HDM1 connection and HD audio settings.
↑The new image for quality evaluation has been created. It was the theme from the early stage of the Super HiVi CAST production. We spent a considerable time on auditioning female models for the promotion to usher in a new phase.
↑In the shooting session, we constructed the rails and took on the challenge of tracking shooting in the studio. We moved horizontally to shoot a female model three-dimensionally. For the lighting, we used deep shade.
Location Hunting and Shooting Sessions in Cuba in South America
and Recorded Performances of Local Musicians with Multi-Recording System
For Super HiVi CAST DVD, the recordings were performed for the “Demonstrations” contents or high quality animation materials in Cuba in South America, in addition to the recording studios in Japan. This country with beautiful nature, historical streets and various types of music, was a very attractive for the recording. In fact, it came up as a topic for discussion 10 years ago, in the film “Buena Vista Social Club” produced by Ry Cooder and last year and this year, in the files “CHE: PART ONE/THE ARGENTINE” and “CHE: PART TWO/GUERRILLA”. Cuba is most certainly a country which interests Japanese people greatly. The High Quality Hi-Vision VCR SONY HDCAM SR which we brought in Cuba, captured successfully beautiful blue sky, many buildings with diversified details and streets resounded with the excitement of active people with different skin colors.
As I introduced, I believe that you understand the half of the charm of Blu-ray disc “Super HiVi CAST” with attractive contents. The remaining half of the charm is the test charts aiming at the era of flat TV which we have focused on extensively. Next time, we will focus on the description of such test charts.
↑This picture is also in the “Sense of Quality” series, showing a classic camera and deep red rose. Please pay special attention to a light that is on the lens, which shows the lighting, out focusing and velvet petals. On the state-of-the-art liquid crystal TV screen, tight images with black outlines can be obtained.
↑“Sense of Quality” is an important key word this time. As it is difficult for a new item to obtain the sense of quality, many vintage guitars were prepared. In this cut, the camera was panned quickly to confirm the out-focused color gradation due to the movement.
